Monolith Resort, Bhimtal a fantabulous place to organize conference and team building

July 20th, 2011

View from Monolith resort

This was the 1st week of July and we took around 25 people of a corporate house in Noida for their quarterly sales review meet. These people have done there conference in many 5 stars & 4 stars and they were bored out of typical concrete structures and wanted something new and interesting. We suggested them Monolith Resorts as the property is a boutique resort and has a beautiful lake view of the Bhimtal lake. The resort is made up of rocks right from its reception, to its swimming pool, to its cottages. The cottages are huge and you will love spending time at every place of it. Some come with a personal balcony with lake view, some come with a personalized sit out area.

open air swimming pool

We started at around 2030 hrs. from their office in a luxury coach. We headed towards a newly opened restaurant called ZAZEN. The ambience of the restaurant was awesome, candles on all tables, nice crockery and very nice hospitality. Drinks and dinner was served and every body liked it. We again started at around 2300 hrs and headed towards Bhimtal.

We took the route from Noida – Hapus By pass – Gajraula – Rampur – Rudrapur – Haldwani – Kathgodam – Bhimtal. Just 320 Kms from Delhi, and approximately a drive of 8.5 hrs we reached Monolith Resort, Bhimtal.

Conference setup in the multi-purpose hall

After a small hike from where the bus was parked we all reached the resort. A welcome letter was given along with the room keys to the guests and hot tea was served. The weather was pleasant and every body was liking the place. As all were tired so they decided to take a nap of two hours and start the conference at around 1100 hrs after breakfast.

At Monolith, conference is organized in the multi purpose hall which is big enough to accommodate 80-90 pax in theater style and 35-40 in U-shape. The hall is made up of wood and has huge glass windows which gives the lake view. During conference these windows are covered with curtains so that it becomes easy to to view the projector.

Amphitheatre

The conference lasted for two days and everyday after lunch we conducted team building activities for them.

Cottage Interiors

The third day was the day for fun team building and water activities. The clients were excited about the day but it started raining from the morning itself. People indulged themselves in playing a frame on the pool table whereas some started with a Table tennis match. At Monolith one can spend time in the activity room which has lot to do like pool table, library, dart game, carrom, chess, card table etc.

Pool Table

At around 1100 hrs. their director took a decision to go ahead for the water activities in-spite of the fact that it was raining and the decision was right also because once we sat in the bus for proceeding to the activity area the rain stopped. We reached the activity area after a small drive of 45 minutes. All of them enjoyed  the water activities and the day was full of fun and enjoyment.

Team Building

On all the evenings drinks and dinner were served pool side and every one use to relax while sipping their drinks and sharing experiences. Food served was also delicious, hygienically prepared and was variety full. Everybody loved the food.

Survival Race

On the fourth day we started after the breakfast for Corbett as the lunch was organized in Infinity resorts. Again a nice resort with a big “GOL GHAR” its restaurant. The restaurant was huge and had wooden furniture.

Natural Jacuzzi

The USP of the restaurant is its deck which gives the view of the kosi river and the woods. The food was again very good and people relished it.

After lunch we started for Delhi. After a journey of around 5 hrs we reached Noida. Every body was happy and the trip was memorable for everyone.

Hope to organize such trips/conferences more often.

Shyamla to Shimla

February 1st, 2010

Simla Now Shimla

Had the British officer, who reached here by chance, not camped here in 1815, the small village called Shyamla with 10 or 15 hamlets would have remained unnoticed and India would have got its Summer Capital during the Raj some where else, perhaps Darjeeling or Marhi, now in Pakistan.

This area and its surrounding hills that included, Garwal too, remained disturbed for a long time due to the aggressions made by the Gurkhas from Nepal in from the early 18th century till 1815 when the local dynasties got together and asked the King of Patiala in Punjab for a help. Gurkha Sikh wars were fought in which Sikhs suffered a complete defeat and then request was extended to the British Government for the help. This is how the British entered these hills and it was under the able guidance of General David Octerlony that Gurkhas lost the battle and British came to power in this region.

Simla's Mall Road in 1890

in 1815 a British Officer moved a troop from Subathoo in the lower hills to Kotgarh in the upper regions and he camped at Shyamala for a few days. The jungle then was full of hyenas, leopards and bears. Locales were surprised to see the “Gora Sahib” – the white skinned gentleman and they came out from all the ten mud houses that Shyamala had. They had come to see him as this was their first chance to see a European. Some even touched him but they did not know that this Gora Sahib was going to mark their small hamlet to the world map.

The officer stayed here for a few days and every morning he would come out of his tent, sipping his coffee and looking at the plains towards the south. He did not know that he was standing at the elelvation on 2195 meters but he was astonished at the resembelance of the climate of this place to his own country. He had never thought that in a warm country like India he would ever find a place that has the same climate like England.

After leaving the troop at Kotgarh he returned to the plains by the same route and there in the plains he strongly recomended to his bosses that they must do something to set up some army posts in these hills. His advice was ignored for nearly next seven years but then they had to send a Political Agent called Captain Cahrles Pratt Kennedy. Captain Kennedy built the first Pucca – Permanent wooden house here. Although the main house was lost in a major fire in 1976 but a part of that still stands at the same place and serves as an office for CPWD.

Simla's south Face

Most of the development took place here.

After that there was no looking back for Simla and everyday it grew to a new dimensions.

Simla remained a summer retreat, a holiday resort and a summer capital for the British Government from 1822 to 1947. They brought here everything. They built here everything. They prepared here everything that was necessarily required to lead a smooth life. Although here in the hills life is very simple but the British made it stylish and the present generation still follows the British lifestyle.

The British constructed roads to Shimla. They even got is connected to the plains through railways. They introduced the best schools of India for both the genders. They brought Medical facilities for locales and European population of the town. They gave us club culture and those clubs are still in use. Every summer to control the entire subcontinent form here, they built the Viceregal Lodge. Now, this building, still the most beautiful in the North India is being used as an Institute of Advanced Study. A visit to Shimla is a failure if this building is missed. This, marvel example of Baronial- Scottish architecture stands on the Observatory Hill at the western end of Shimla.

Christ Church - The Most Prominent Landmark of Town

Christ Church - the most Prominent Landmark of Shimla

Christ Church of Shimla is another piece of attraction and is one of the most prominent landmarks in Shimla. The second oldest protestant Church stands still at the Ridge, below the western Shoulder of Jakhu Hill. The Shimla Ridge starts from this Church and extends towards west. This yellow colored building dominates the entire area and is visitble from most of the places in town. The major attraction, till a few years ago, in this building were the frescos around the Glass paintings made by Mr. Lockwood Kiling, Rudyard Kipling’s Father. Those frescos were burried under the plaster during the renovation and the manangement of the Church has no answer to this negligence.

I think that there is no other shopping street that is more beautiful then the Mall Road of Shimla. The Tudor Style structures of Shops make it look like an old English Town. The Norman Gothic building of Gaiety theatre adds another jewel to its beauty.

The Main Hub of Shimla

Scandal Point - Everyone Meets, Greets and Chats here.

Scandal point is the place at the Mall road where everyone meets, greets and Chats. This place is associated to a fake story that says that the daughter of the Commander in Chief was abducted by the King of Punjab. This is a pointless Scandal.

There are a number of other buildings which were all built by British such as Gaiety Theater, General Post Office, Bantony, Gorton Castle, Caston Hall (Now known as Dc
